Imphal, December 18 2009:
Manipur Minority Commission today observed "Minority Rights Day-2009 in the state too with a function at GM Hall, Imphal.
State Chief Electoral Officer PC Lawmkunga, IAS attended the function as chief guest.
Speaking on the occasion, PC Lawmkunga said that it is the bounden duty of the state as well as central government to protect rights of the minorities apart from improving their living conditions by providing grants after knowing their real social status.
As without education, they could not know what their rights are, emphasis needs to be given in imparting education to this weaker section of the society and take up various measures which would improve their
living conditions.
Chairman of the Manipur State Minority Commission, Helim Chaudury who presided over the function said that the day has been observed with the objective of giving awareness on the rights of the minorities given by the constitution.
The state minority commission was set up with the objective of finding out difficulties facing by the minority people and to recommend the state government to address it but due to shortfall in the staff pattern, the commission could not fulfill the expectation of the people, he regretted.
On the occasion, booklet Guidelines of Schemes of MOBC Department; annual report and recommendation of MSMC and Manipuri Transcription of PMS fifteen point programme and RTI was also released on the occasion.
A 15 minute long documentary on achievement of MSMC was also screened.
The function was attended by leaders of minority groups of people.
