A churachandpur-based ngo called Central Social Welfare, Government of India, which has been accused of collecting crores of rupees from many people on the pretext of appointing them as workers and helpers at Anganwadi Centres to be opened by the NGO, has been banned by the district police.
Following a directive of Deputy Commissioner, Churachandpur district to check and verify the NGO, of which office is located at Zougam bazar, the district police had been keeping a surveilance over the activities of the NGO for quite some time, and laid hands on the NGO on December 13 .
Addl SP, Churachandpur district police, Manimohon told the Hueiyen Lanpao that police filed a case suo motu and raided the office of the Central Social Welfare, Government of India, which was established in August, 2007 .
The police officer said, at first the NGO appeared to operate under the Government of India.
However, the NGO had not registered itself under the Registrar of Cooperative Society.
nquiry was made with the Social Welfare Department, Government of Manipur as regard the NGO.
However, the Department have no record nor knowledge about the NGO.
Then police went to the Social Welfare Board to look up if there is a Central Social Welfare, Government of India on the list of NGOs working under the Board, but found none, Addl SP, Manimohon said.
As there is no record of such an NGO in all the departments concerned of the government, the police raided the office on December 13 and took the DDO identified as Chingthiannem @ Nempi (35), wife of Sukhnum of Upper Lamka, Churachandpur, into custody, police said.
The police seized 30 seals and relevant documents.
The DDO was produced before the Judicial Magistrate, Churachandpur and remanded in police custody till December 18.As the date for remand has lapsed today, court released her on bail.
Police have reports that the NGO had collected amounts ranging upto Rs 40,000 from a person.
However, no complaint from any one has been lodged with the district police so far.
Police appealed to those from whom the NGO had collected money on false promise of providing job to come and file complaint with the police.
