The 53rd Foundation Day of the National Students' Union of India (NSUI), the students' wing of Congress party, was celebrated on Sunday at Cong'ress Bhawan, BT Road, here.
MPCC president K Meghachandra, who attended the celebration function as chief guest, said that NSUI provides a platform for young students to become leaders by facilitating communication with different leaders.
With the establishment of NSUI, Congress leaders of the past provided benefits to students in different sectors, he recalled, while expressing hope that the present generation of students could become good leaders in future through the NSUI.
While reminding the gathering that NSUI was established by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, K Meghachandra said that NSUI not only gives platform to student community in social programmes and career but also instils in them sense of patriotism.
While pointed out that many NSUI leaders have become leaders of national repute, Meghachandra said incumbent Himachal Pradesh chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu was one of the NSUI presidents in the past.
The Congress president also contended NCERT recently removed chapters on history of Mughal Empire from the syllabi of class X, XI and XII, and on democracy and diversity at the behest and pressure of the BJP government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Terming the NCERT move as a big blow to students, he said NSUI has been voicing objection against the removal as such an unprecedented policy undermines democratic principles in the country.
The celebration function was also attended by Congress MLAs and NSUI Manipur president MdKabir Ahmed.
