Mental health care programme

A one-day awareness programme on mental health care was organised by the Alzheimers and Related Disorders Society of India, Manipur Chapter and the Manipur Network of Positive People (MNP+) at the latter's conference under the sponsorship of Manipur State Mental Health Authority today.
The awareness programme was attended by Chairperson of Social Welfare Board RK Nayansana and Imphal West CMO S Bimolakumari as chief guest and president respectively.
Imphal West District Family Welfare Officer Dr Usha Khundrakpam and MNP+ general secretary Salam Udita were also present as guests of honour.
Speaking at the awareness programme as a resource person, T Suresh Singh of the Manipur State Mental Health Authority, quoting WHO report, stated around 20 to 30 per cent of the world population are suffering from mental disorders.
Three people committed suicide every three seconds across the world due to depression.
Some of the common mental disorders are depression, anxiety, insomnia, tendency to commit suicide, loss of self-esteem, loss of appetite, lethargy, abnormal sweating, phobia for different things etc.
If any member of a family is showing these symptoms, experts and psychiatrists should be consulted immediately, Suresh said.
The prevailing conflict situation and the issue of HIV/AIDS are two major factors for increased number of people afflicted by depression and mental disorders.
