Zeliangrongs rally for merger

A large number of people from the Zeliangrong community took out a silent march in the capital city today to demand merger of scattered Zeliangrong areas as well as to protest the intended creation of Sadar hills district by bifurcating Naga-inhabited areas.
The silent rally jointly organised by Committee Against the Creation of Sadar hills District and Zeliangrong Union (Assam, Manipur & Nagaland) saw a large turn-out of Zeliangrong people from different places of the State.
The rally, which started at around 11.30 am from Ragailong was stopped upon nearing Khuman Lampak Main Stadium gate by a team of Imphal West district police who rejected the rally organisers' insistence that the rally would be peaceful and democratic on the ground that there was neither permission from the Deputy Commissioner concerned nor was congregation of such a large number of people permissible since 144 CrPC is already in place.

The rally returned to Ragailong after marching upto Dingku Road.
Speaking to newspersons on the sideline of the rally, ZU (AM&N) president Amu Kamei iterated that there is no on the sideline of the rally ZU (AM&N) president Amu Kamei iterated that there is no problem in the Government granting districthood to Sadar Hills or Jiribam.
However, Zeliangrong villages located in these proposed districts should be merged with Tamenglong district, he affirmed.
Amu prevailed upon all concerned not to disintegrate the Zeliangrong people on political ground.
After the silent rally participated by Zeliangrong people from Senapati, Churachandpur and Sadar Hills areas, a four member delegation handed over a memorandum to the Governor, who reportedly assured the delegate that their concern would be discussed with the Chief Minister of Manipur.
Memorandum incorporating the long demand of the Zeliangrong was also submitted to the Chief Minister, after which the delegates returned for a meeting where various resolutions pertaining to safeguarding Zeliangrong areas and related issues were adopted.
