National Handloom Expo opens

The National Handloom Expo 2014, organised in connection with Ningol Chakkouba festival by Manipur Apex Weavers and Handicrafts Artisans' CS Ltd, has kick started at GM hall from today.
Commerce and Industries Additional Director T Rajen and Manipur Apex Handloom Weavers and Handicrafts Artisans' CS Ltd President M Satyabhama graced the opening function as chief guest and functional president respectively.
Weaver Service Centre, Porompat, Office of the Development Commissioner for Handloom Assistant Director (Weaving) SP Thubrikar and National Handloom Development Corporation Ltd Officer-in-Charge Y Shantikumar also attended the function as guests of honour.
T Rajen while speaking at the function exhorted the weavers to put in extra effort to enhance production as the State stands third in the whole country in handloom items production.
He said that introduction of powerloom technology would not affect handloom items production of the State.
Informing the gathering that the Central Government has been providing assistance to weavers from time to time, T Rajen asked the weavers to purchase yarn from the yarn bank, opened by the Government.
He also urged the loanee weavers to repay the loans on time.
In her speech, M Satyabhama said that the fair is organised in connection with the upcoming Ningol Chakkouba festival.
She also requested the public to encourage the handloom weavers by purchasing their items showcased at the fair.
Around 100 stalls are opened at the fair, organised under the sponsorship of the Office of the Development Commissioner for Handlooms, Ministry of Textile, Government of India.
