ANSAM urges Govt to take immediate step on bringing quality education

Imphal, November 26 2015: All Naga Students' Association, Manipur (ANSAM) urged the Government to take immediate steps in bringing quality education in the Government Higher Secondary Schools located in the hill districts.

In a statement, ANSAM Secretary Education AC Thotso stated that ANSAM had discussed the issue of quality education with the Principals of all the Government Colleges located in the Hill Districts.

It was the second time such initiatives were taken up by ANSAM, said the ANSAM education secretary.

Thotso said that the meeting mainly focused on identifying shortage within the given provision and guidelines under higher education institutions in India and also to authenticate ANSAM findings through direct interaction with the head of the colleges from all the Hill Districts.

He said that the Principals had submitted a short description of the College profiles and highlighted their grievances due to shortages of basic provisions and entitlements in their respective colleges.

Thotso pointed that the oldest College in Hill Districts, William Pettigrew College in Ukhrul was established in the year 1965.The college has 13 departments with only 12 regular teaching faculty including the Principal; Tamenglong College has 16 teachers against 35 sanction post, still 19 teaching staffs are storage; United College in Chandel District has 15 departments and there is a shortage of 40 teaching staffs; Hill College, Tadubi in Senapati District has 6 Departments and 17 storage teachers; Churachandpur College has 15 Department and still 21 teachers storage.

The cases of acute shortages in all the basis educational infrastructures are noted from ANSAM findings as well as reports from the Principals.

However, on the contrary over a period of time the State Government has consistently investing and developing Colleges based in the valley districts.

Of nearly 80 Colleges including private government aided colleges in the State, around 50 colleges are located in four Valley Districts which is less than the total geographical size of Phungyar Constituency in Ukhrul and Tamei constituency in Tamenglong.

So it is not surprising to see Manipur as one of the top performing State in higher education enrolment with 33 % (for ST it is approx.

24 %).

The current enrolment at the national level is 18 %.

The excellent performance cannot happen without Government Colleges in the State.

Unfortunately, the achievement is limited only in the four valley districts.

If the State gives equal important in the hill based colleges by at least fulfilling basic provisions entitle to higher education as per UGC guidelines it would develop in the hill districts.
