MPCB to install water monitoring stations

Stating that rivers contribute largely in the pollution of Loktak Lake, Manipur Pollution Control Board (MPCB) chairman MLA L Radhakishore said that the board would be installing one water monitoring stations each in a suitable locations in all rivers falling into the lake.
Attending the National Pollution Control Day commemorating the incident of Bhopal gas tragedy at the board's office, Lamphelpat on Thursday, Radhakishore expressed concern over the increasing rate of pollution in the state and said that the observance spreads the message of shunning activities contributing to pollution.
The board has been taking up various measures to check environmental pollution and the public also need to play their part in preventing pollution in their surroundings.
He also appealed to the public to inform the board if they come across any activities abetting pollution that need immediate intervention.
The board had set up 14 air quality monitoring stations in different districts and two more will come up soon.
Similarly, water quality monitoring stations are need of the hour to reduce water pollution.
Each river that falls into the Loktak Lake will have three such stations - one before reaching Imphal City, the major point of pollution, the second in the most polluted areas, and the third near the river mouth before reaching the lake.
It will help in monitoring the water quality, taking up right interventions and prevent further pollution of the river water, he said.
At the same time, the board has set up District Environment Action Plan Committees in all the 16 districts to monitor pollution level and take up policy planning to address their root causes.
The government had banned single use plastics and food packaging, he said and appealed to the public to dispose waste materials properly.
