Ukhrul, October 09 2015 :
Although some sections of the public are growing disquieted over the increasing positive cases of dengue reported in several parts of Manipur, Ukhrul district has remained largely indifferent to the outbreak of the disease.
No pressure groups here have sounded any alerts just as the district health authority has not taken any precautionary measures to deal with the eventuality.
With the climate of erstwhile cold Ukhrul district growing warmer and the population of mosquitoes fast increasing, some denizens of the district are apprehensive of the possible outbreak of the mosquito-borne disease.
"Today our place is full of mosquitoes, so must always take care that the insect does not cause dengue or other viral diseases," said a house wife Mimi, resident of Phungreitang.
A medical officer on condition of anonymity said that dengue fever is primarily caused by mosquitoes known as Aedes.
"It is advisable that the community learn to keep their surroundings clean and free from piling rubbishes, to ward off the outbreak of mosquitoes-borne diseases like dengue." While stating that chances of dengue outbreak maybe farther for Ukhrul district than other warmer districts of the State, he recalled that he witnessed a case of dengue in the district some years back.
"It is better off to be cautious than being indifferent," he cautioned.
Meanwhile, no civil society organizations, NGOs or relevant authorities have initiated to sensitize the dangers of dengue and other viral diseases to the public in the district till date.
When contacted, the district health authority sources informed Hueiyen Lanpao on Friday evening that they had not received any directives from the State Health Directorate, Imphal to take any precautionary measures in Ukhrul in connection with the current outbreak of dengue in the State.
