The Spirit of Performing Arts Centre Manipur bagged Best Performance title in the 5th Surin International Folklore Festival 2010 held in Surin province, Thailand from January 14 to 24 .
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club here today, MLA T Mangibabu who accompanied the State artistes together with MLA Prithiviraj said that the folklore festival was participated by artistes from 15 different countries.
Artistes of the Spirit of Performing Arts Centre Manipur presented Thougal Jagoi, Laiching Jagoi, Kabui Jagoi, Thang-Chai-naba (sword duel) and stick dance which fetched them the best performance title.
A cultural troupe from Nagaland also participated in the festival.
Associate Professor Dr L Kunjeswori of Manipur University presented a paper on "History of Traditional Textile Industry in Manipur" during a one day academic session organised as a part of the folklore festival.
Modhuchandra feted with Governor Art Award :Governor Art Award 2009 instituted by the Arts Society Manipur and given to outstanding artists every three years has been conferred to L Modhuchandra.
The award was given away by Governor Gurbachan Jagat during a function held in the mini-auditorium of Art and Culture Department at Palace Compound.
Speaking at the occasion, Gurbachan Jagat said that all civilizations of the world throughout history have developed art.
India also has a long tradition of fine arts and paintings and this was proved by the paintings and sculptures decorating temples and famous caves across the country.
Noting that the Arts Society Manipur, established in 1972, has evolved into an important platform for artists and art-lovers of the State, Gurbachan remarked that this was a matter of pride for Manipur.
Governor Gurbachan Jagat who was the chief guest at the occasion also released a souvenir.
Commissioner Arts and Culture P Bharat and Chairman of Arts Society Manipur L Shamu were also present at the function as guest of honour and president respectively.
Later, the chief guest open an art exhibition organised in connection with the function.
