Cycle Rally to spread awareness campaign flagged off

Imphal, April 16 2017: Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly, Yumnam Khemchand Singh flag off a cycle rally from Yumnam Leikai Lairembi Lampak today.

The rally will spread message of "Let's make plastic free rivers" on saving the Rivers of Manipur.

The cycle rally started from Yumnam Leikai lairenbi lampak and crosses Heirangoithong, Wahengbam Leikai, Nagamapal along the Nambul River side heading towards Khurai, Kongba, Uchekon Bashikhong along the Kongba River and back to the river bank at Nongmaishang (Singjamei) Bheigyabati leikai passing through Singjamei Kshetri Leikai where a concert in the theme "Let's Make Plastic Free Rivers" is going to take place.

Speaking to the media persons, Yumnam Khemchand Singh, Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly said that though Manipur has been included in the second phase of Smart City, various awareness campaign taken up by today's youth who are independent and non- government registered body to make the city clean is highly appreciated and everyone must support.

The Speaker also said that as the aim of the organisation equals the project to be taken up by the state government, these matter will be put up the concern minister.

A seminar will also be organised along with the organization at the earliest on the theme of how a proper solid waste management plan can be set up in the state to make it a proper smart city by bringing out a white paper to the people of the state, he added.

One of the organizers of today's cycle rally Tom Meisnam from Singjamei Thokchom Leikai said that the main aim of today's cycle rally and river bank festival is just not only awareness campaign but a part of a protest to save the rivers of Manipur.

If entire systems of Solid waste management system, plastic re-cycle plan are set up in the state, solution to keep Nambul River and all the main rivers of Manipur clean and drinkable state can be set up with the current situation of the various rivers in Manipur, he added.

Tom also said that though various awareness are share to the public not to throw garbage and waste materials including plastic products, use of river bank as dumping ground is still practice but once the government manage to set up dumping site for garbage waste materials, such practice can bring to an end.

Tom appeals the people of Manipur to stop dumping of garbage and waste materials at the river banks and government to bring out a solution to end the practice before rivers of Manipur becomes a dumping site in the near future.
