Imphal, March 28 2018:
In protest against the untimely transfer of the principal of Catholic School, Canchipur in Imphal West, students of the school staged a sit-in protest in front of its entrance today.
Speaking to media persons, Thongam Joy who is a senior
teacher of the school informed that principal Father Soni Thomas received a verbal order for transfer from Archbishop's House, Imphal recently.
He contended that the transfer of Father Soni Thomas was related to an incident of rejecting an instruction
from the higher authority of Archbishop's House, Imphal) for taking loan.
He mentioned that the authority instructed the principal in the recent past to take a loan amounting to Rs 2 Crore for construction of the school building.
Joy confided that the prin-
cipal and the teachers/parish leaders held a meeting wherein the instruction was rejected.
He elaborated that the instruction for taking loan was rejected by the meeting in consideration of the burden the school has to bear in the present and future.
Disclosing that the loan to be taken has to be repaid within 10 years with interests, he said that the school authority may face an unwarranted situation where the school fees have to be hikened which will make parents of the students to
suffer a lot.
He also said that the transfer of the principal came soon after the rejection of the instruction.
He suspected that the verbal order seemed to have been made at the behest of someone who is against the rejection.
He said that principal of the school usually stays for a period of four to five years.
The period may be extended according to the needs, he added.
He then drew the attention of the students' organisations and civil society organisations of the State to consider the matter and extend help in making the principal stay till the end of construction of the school building.
