Mapithel Dam releases water sans apt warning

Mapithel Downstream Affected People's (MDAP) has claimed that Mapithel dam has released its waters without any proper warning at around 2 pm today.
A press release issued by the president of MDAP, claimed that on March 26, the IFCD had informed the local clubs of Tamukhong village that the water will be released but without any accurate information as to when and how.
Expressing concern for several other villages located at the downstream areas which have not been informed at all about the release of Mapithel Dam waters, it explained that several stone quarries and sands worth lakhs of rupees will be washed away by the water.
It informed that in 2015 during Ningol Chakkouba month, villagers who were piling sands for sale during the festive month were drastically affected after Mapithel Dam water was released without any warning and the sands worth around Rs 5 lakh was washed away in a matter of seconds.
The Mapithel Dam adjacent village Tamukhong has about 250 families and a population of roughly 1300 .
For centuries the villagers have been dependent on the water of Thoubal river but now it has been completely destroyed after the construction of Mapithel Dam, it added.
MDAP further demanded the authority concerned to completely halt the Mapithel Dam project and to let Thoubal river flow naturally.
