Concerted efforts from Govt & public needed for tackling HIV issue: Shyamjai

There is need for concerted efforts from both the government and public to face the HIV/AIDS menace as the disease itself has become a serious issue to deal with in the society, said Wangkhemcha Shyamjai, president of All Manipur Working Journalists' Union while speaking at the Community Event function organized by Community Network for Environment at Retreat House, Mantripukhri in Imphal East today.
Speaking as the Functional President, Shyamjai further said that the rate of HIV positive people in the State is still high and it needs prompt intervention.
The government needs to face the HIV issue sincerely by adopting effective policy and measures to minimize the rate of HIV positive people, he added.

He stressed the need for creating awareness on the issue at different parts of the State from time to time, and asserted that distribution of leaflets which contain useful information of HIV to the people after translating them into different local dialects can prove to be an effective step as a measure to tackle the issue.
Stating that people working on the issue of HIV/AIDS need to show sincerity and courage without thinking much of rewards, Shyamjai called upon the people to share grievances of People Living with HIV/AIDS and try to bring them in the mainstream.
Sheilesh Kumar Chourasia, Project Director of Manipur State AIDS Control Society who attended the occasion as Chief Guest said that more efforts meant for curbing potential threat of the issue are needed although many organizations have been working on the issue from time to time.
Today's function was also attended by Babloo Loitongbam, executive director of Human Rights Alert as Guest of Honor.
