CADA conducts anti-drug awareness at Kumbi

As part of its campaign against drugs abuse and alcoholism in Manipur, Coalition Against Drugs & Alcohol (CADA) organized at a one-day awareness programme on 'impacts of drugs and role of people in its eradication' at Kumbi Bazar in Bishnupur district on Saturday.
The programme was organised in collaboration with Development Youth Club (DYC), Kumbi and Society for Disable Persons (SDP), Manipur.
Advocate Yumnam Ratan, President CADA and Thokchom (O) Manglembi, President, CADA Bishnupur District Committee attended the programme as chief guest and president respectively, while Wahengbam (O) Sorojini, Ex.
Councillor Ward-4, Kumbi Municipal Council; Nongmaithem Iboton, General Secretary, Society for Disable Person, Manipur and Moiranghtem (O) Nungsitombi, Councillor Ward-3, Kumbi Municipal Council as guests of honour.
During the programme, Secretary General of CADA Dipanjit Ningthoujam, Secretary Ogranisation Nepram (O) Bimola and Advisor CADA Bishnupur District Committee Chingakham Shyam delivered lectures as resource persons.
Pointing out that students and youths start taking various types of drugs with initial taste of tobacco products, Dipanjit Ningthoujamna said, 'we should not use intoxicants and drugs only because of the reason that our elders use them' .
Drugs damage the central nervous system of our body and affect the mental and physical well being of the students, said Dipanjit, while adding that mentally ill students cannot compete with others in the society.
Quoting Health Minister Phungjathang Tonsing who said 'Half of Manipur population is addicted to tobacco in one form or the other', Dipanjit warned that half of the state's population will contract Cancer disease in the near future.
Asking why the government is allowing open sale of tobacco products, the CADA General Secretary charged the authority for not putting a ban on business of tobacco products and other intoxicants.
Resource person Chingakham Shyam, in his lecture, appealed to the people to work together against the abusive substances.
Most crimes in the state originate from use of drugs and alcohol, said Nepram (O) Bimola, while adding that we must uproot all kinds of intoxicating substances from the state so as to get rid of unwanted happenings in society.
Chief guest Nongmaithem Iboton called upon those who deal in drugs and alcohol to do normal businesses.
Advocate Yumnam Ratan retorted that despite the enforcement of Manipur Liquor Prohibition Act 1991, many people are doing the liquor business in Manipur.
