Imphal, November 23 2019:
Despite intense security measures being taken up by the State police at various locations during the last few days to ensure smooth conduct of the Manipur Sangai Tourism Festival, a bomb exploded along Imphal Airport road at around 5.20 pm today.
According to local eyewitnesses, the blast occurred in front of Kwakeithel Leimakhujam Local Youth Development Association complex when some unidentified persons hurled a hand grenade towards security personnel of 93 Battalion BSF who were deployed in the area from early morning today.
The locals claimed that two unidentified persons riding a motorbike came towards Keishampat from Sangaiprou side and hurled the hand grenade towards the BSF personnel, who were standing on the rear side of a truck used for transporting the troops.
Soon after the blast, the area was cordoned off by a team of Imphal West commando.
Imphal West SP K Meghachandra also arrived at the spot to inspect the blast site.
Further, a bomb expert team also investigated the site and opined that the bomb might be a Chinese hand grenade as they recovered small iron balls/fragments from the area.
Fortunately no one was injured in the blast.
