Imphal, November 23 2019:
AIDS, TREAT Asia/amfAR Project Manager for Community and Policy, Giten Khwairakpam, has observed that there is growing need for strengthening health care settings and increasing awareness about viral hepatitis in the State.
Advocating collective efforts of NGOs and all concerned, towards fighting viral hepatitis, he said that the death expectancy of viral hepatitis in India is relatively higher than AIDS.
He was speaking on the topic "The National Viral Hepatitis Control Program (NVHCP): Context, Objectives, components and targets" at the training for Project Managers of TI NGOs under Manipur State AIDS Control Society (MSACS) on Diagnosis and treatment of Hepatitis C and the NVHCP, organized by Community Network for Empowerment (CoNE) in consultation with MSACS and supported by UNITAID through Coalition PLUS, at Hotel Classic, North AOC yesterday.
When viral hepatitis kills about 10 lakhs people, AIDS kills around 7 lakhs people, he said.
Reminding that India under NVHCP is targeting to eliminate 90 percent of viral hepatitis by 2030, he went on to underscore the importance of the proper implementation of the programme as well as harm reduction programme.
Giten reminded that the NVHCP was launched on July 28 last year to fight the disease.
