One day training / interaction programme held

All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Nematodes in Agriculture, Imphal Centre under Directorate of Research, Central Agricultural University, Imphal and the Progressive Farmer's Club Yairipok Yambem jointly organised a one day training cum interaction programme on 'Awareness towards nematodes' at Yairipok Yambem, Imphal East, yesterday.
53 farmers participated in the programme funded by AICRP on Nematodes in Agriculture, ICAR, said a statement of Central Agricultural University Imphal.
Addressing the' programme, a farmer, S Jogendra Kumar Singh mentioned the importance of the training programme on nematodes and added that such training is necessary for the farming community as farmers are still unaware of the nematode problems in crops.
Sanabam Gitarani Devi, Mutum Tombi Devi, Chirom Pema Devi, Nirjahal and Sarakatun, Member of Yambem Gram Panchayat also attended the programme.
Dr Kshetrimayum Sumita, Assistant Nematologist, AICRP (Nematodes), CAU, Imphal Centre started the training programme with an introduction to nematodes: what is nematode, how it looks like, what are the losses caused by them.
She also gave the presentation on nematode pests of vegetables and rice as well as on the emerging nematode problems in different crops like potato, garlic, onion, passion fruit etc.
Emphasis was given on soil solarization, crop rotation, deep summer ploughing, planting of marigold, mustard and use of bio-control agents along with organic manures like neem cake for the management of nematode problems in vegetable crops and rice fields, it added.
Wet preservation of infested roots by root-knot nematode on different crops like cucumber, tomato, king chilli, French bean, brinjal etc collected from other parts of Manipur as well as live specimen of plant parasitic nematodes were shown to the farmers, it added.
