Ukhrul, January 25 2021:
Aggrieved over the failure of the contractor concerned to complete the PMGSY road construction within the stipulated time frame, villagers of Poi and Huishu have come out strongly against the lethargic work and served two months time to complete the road work, reports our Ukhrul correspondent.
Residents of Huishu and Poi today conducted a joint inspection of the ongoing PMGSY road construction and noted that no progress can be seen in the construction work.
This is besides the sub-standard work quality, compelling them to set a deadline of two months time to complete the road work.
Other than setting the deadline of two months, the villagers unanimously resolved to constitute a separate local PMGSY monitoring committee.
The committee will highlight the situation of the ongoing PMGSY work to the State Government to seek their immediate intervention and initiate action against the erring contractor.
Talking to this correspondent, Headman of Huishu village Ngazekwung pointed out that the PMGSY road stretch starting from Poi village to Huishu is in a deplorable state.
According to him, the 16 kms long PMGSY road is funded by Ministry of Rural Development and executed by MSRRDA to connect rural villages with the nearest National Highway for transportation convenience.
But this is still a distant dream for the people of the two villages, stated the Headman.
PMGSY construction work commenced on March 6, 2019 and it was to be completed within 18 months.
They alleged that the contractor failed to follow PMGSY road pavement specification with no granular sub-base of 200 mm thick stones during shingling, Ngazekwung added.
The road has not been widened and there is no visible progress or improvement in the work, he added.
According to them, the fund set aside for the road construction work is Rs 6.18 crore.
The work components include earthwork and widening, construction of culverts, protection wall, retaining wall and side drainage.
Poi and Huishu villages have served the ultimatum to the contractor to complete the work within two months before the rainy season arrives.
They further urged the department executing the PMGSY road construction to conduct spot verification at the earliest, and withhold all funds until the matter is settled.
