Mizoram church reiterates opposition to review of MLTP Act

Reiterating its opposition to Mizoram government's plan to review and repeal the Mizoram Liquor Total Prohibition Act (MLTP Act), the Mizoram Synod, the highest administrative body of the largest Church denomination, Mizoram Presbyterian Church of India, in ardent appeal, asked the state government for the continuation of MLTP Act, 1995 to enforce even in stricter form stating liquor as the enemy of God and an obstacle to societal development of the Mizos.
The church body also asked the people not to endorse 'The Mizoram Liquor (Prohibition & Control) Bill, 2014 .
Convening a press conference at Aizawl Press Club here today, H.Zoliana, Senior Secretary, Mizoram Synod (church) told media persons that the existing MLTP Act, 1995 as of now is widely endorsed by churches in Mizoram.
"Right after the implementation of the total liquor prohibition act in the state, peace has been prevailed in our society.
The MLTP Act provides liberty to the people as it prevents sin, evil, violence and death occurred owing to misuse of liquor", the church leader said.
H Zoliana said that looking at the perspective of the Bible and how the Mizos see drunkards with a taboo, relaxation of liquor prohibition is therefore not daring and is not something to think about right now.
"The enforcement of MLTP Act is a blessing for every individual, family, society and our land.
As such, the prohibitory Act of 1995 should be continued in a stricter manner than review or repeal it", H.Zoliana asserted.
The church leader further said that the church body has relentlessly taught its members to abstain from wine and not sell the same.
"Looking at the evil effects of liquor, it can be proudly called the enemy of God and a block to societal progress.
Considering this effects, we asked every individual to abstain from liquor and take voluntary initiative to eliminate liquor from the state", he said while adding, "Mizoram Synod (church) has also strongly appealed all individuals not to endorse and say yes to 'The Mizoram Liquor (Prohibition & Control) Bill, 2014, by which the government intended to review and amend the existing liquor prohibition law" .
