Imphal, December 08 2014:
Born with disfigured hands and legs, 14-year old Pushpa Chanu still has hopes to walk as a normal person.
However, due to sheer poverty, her parents are still unable to bear the treatment expenses for their daughter.
In an exclusive interview with this Daily, Nongthonbam Ongbi Sheitapati who is mother of the differently able Pushpa lamented that she would not be able to die leaving behind her daughter in such a situation.
A student of class V in Ngairangbam Primary School, Pushpa is the last among four children of Nongthonbam Khunjao and Nongthonbam ongbi Sheitapati of Ngairangbam Makha Leikai in Imphal west district.

Sheitapati told this Daily that in spite of poverty, all her children are studying hard to become respectable persons in society.
She said her eldest son Mangijao (20 years) is studying in 3rd semester, second son Romesh (18) reading in class XII and third child Nirupama (16) in class IX .
Her husband works as Mason and she does weaving at home, except during the harvest seasons when they work as hired labourers.
Being poor and illiterate parents, they could not provide medical treatment to Pushpa whose legs and hands had been abnormal by birth.
Expressing desperation over the abnormal birth of the daughter, Sheitapati said her two hands cannot be bent, while the right leg leans backward and inflexible left leg cannot be curved.
Although Pushpa is unable to eat for herself, she manages to walk with the support of a cane, said Pushpa's mother.
As the little friends of the girl always avoided her during the festive Yaoshang season, Pushpa remained inside the home, he mother narrated.
The differently able girl has been making 'Teddy Bears' and also taken part in various exhibitions.
The Studious Pushpa has now been receiving scholarships amounting to Rs 440 since 2012, after availing of 'Disabled Certificate' with the help of Ch Opendro, president of Relief Centre for the Welfare of Differently Able Persons, Manipur.
Pushpa whose disability degree is 85 percent, has also got an artificial limb for her left leg, through the Zonal Education Officer Gopimohon Maibam.
However, regarding the right leg, the Doctors at JNIMS suggested for surgical operation to cut off the backward-leaned leg and to fit with artificial limb at the Sija Hospital and Research Institute at Langol in Imphal west.
This was advised by Doctors at JNIMS, when Pushpa was examined by them 7/8 months back.
As informed by her mother, Pushpa may be able to walk herself without the help of cane or celliber, if artificial limb is attached after PMR treatment.
But due to poverty, she is unable to bear the operation expenses, lamented Sheitapati.
