Imphal, April 05 2011:
A protest rally planned by people at Khurai area to register strong annoyance with the government's failure to book the culprit(s) in the murder of Yendrembam Naoba @ Bidyananda on March 13 last was foiled by police today.
Naoba of Kongpal Laishram Leikai had died when he was beaten up for allegedly stealing goods from a shop at Khurai Konsam Leikai.
Local people of Khurai Konsam Leikai had alleged that Naoba died of drowning in a public pond where he had jumped in a bid to escape from the crowd attacking him but locals of Kongpal Laishram Leikai denounced it saying that he was thrown into the pond after being lynched.
Residents of Kongpal Laishram Leikai seething with anger are demanding the booking of the culprit(s) in the murder case.
They had, on many instances, attempted to ransack the shop cum house at Konsam Leikai where Naoba was caught on the charge of stealing but police had foiled all their efforts.
As part of continuing protest against the murder and allegations that the police have failed to take up appropriate action, a large number of people of the area under the aegis of the JAC formed in connection with the death of Naoba gathered today at Khurai Laikhutlembi ground with the intention of carrying out a rally.
A police team from Imphal East district police HQs, who arrived before the rally set off, prevented the people from carrying out the rally.
A heated exchange of words erupted between the police and the leaders of the JAC.
However, the agitated people were calmed down with the intervention of local MLA, Dr Ng Bijoy.
However, JAC convener, G Anita said that they suspended the planned rally following an assurance from the Imphal East SP Th Radheshyam that culprit(s) would be booked at the earliest.
She warned that if the SP fails to translate his assurance into work at the earliest, the JAC with the support of other NGOs will launch intensified forms of agitations.
