Imphal, April 05 2011:
A serious question mark hangs over the Manipur police's credibility when people resisted them from being taken away a hand grenade and demanded disposal of the same before the public.
Suspected militants launched a failed grenade attack to an Airtel Tower at Lambal village of Imphal West district, under Lamshang Police Station, in the land belonging to one Inoucha Singh today around 11.30 am.
A police team rushed to spot and defused the bomb safely around noon.
When the police team was about to leave the place with the bomb, without disposing, people of the area blocked their way and asked to dispose the bomb at a safe place nearby.
Failure on the part of the crowd to allow them leaves the place, the police team called the personnel of the state police bomb detection and disposal squad and disposed off the bomb at a nearby paddy field later around 1 pm.
Locals said that they are disbelieved with the police taking away the live bomb as there was high possibility of using the recovered bomb in other purposes, like claiming recovery from UGs they arrested or killed in what they claim in encounter.
In another unrelated incident, police have arrested a contractor, Subash Singh of Samushang under Lamphel police station today around 1 pm after he fired several rounds of guns causing panicky to the local residents.
The contractor, with drunk, fired several rounds from his licensed gun.
Locals lodged the complaint when family members could not control him and continued to fire.
No casualty was reported in the firing.
Sit in protest against the bomb threats were staged by the womenfolk today.
