Imphal, April 05 2011:
Setting April 15 as the deadline for meeting the demand to upgrade Phungyar Assembly Constituency as a full fledged separate district after segregating from Ukhrul district, a meeting of the Phungyar District Demand Committee today has resolved to take recourse to various intense agitations if the demand is not met.
A meeting of the Committee held at the Babupara official residence of Phungyar Assembly Constituency and its convenor Wungnaoshang Keishing decided that various intense agitations including picketing of Government officials and imposition of State-wide bandh would be launched for the democratic rights of the people in the Constituency comprising four sub-divisions of Ukhrul district if the demand for creation of Phungyar as a separate district of the State is not fulfilled by April 15 .
Member of Ukhrul Autonomous District Council KS Joseph, president of All Tribal Chiefs' Association AS Shimreishang, president of Southern Tangkhul Students; Union Shimthar Jajo, vice president of Kuki Inpi (Ukhrul district) T Alum, president of Sambu Long (Kamjong) Gidion Zimik, chairman of Leimashen Chingshang (Kasom Khullen) K Lovingson, village chiefs and many social workers attended the meeting.

All those who spoke at the meeting pointed out that the four sub-divisions of Ukhrul district namely, Phungyar, Kamjong, Kasom Khullen and Sahamphung jointly constitute Phungyar Assembly Constituency since 1959.Covering a total area of 2700 sq kms, the Assembly Constituency has a total population of around 60,000 people.
However, on account of its remote location from Ukhrul district headquarters, Phungyar Assembly Constituency has remained backward socially, economically, financially and educationally.
Taking into consideration all these factors and in the interest of ensuring better administration to the people, Phungyar Assembly Constituency should be created as a separate district of the State, the speakers demanded, while urging the State Cabinet to take a definite decision in this regard at the earliest possible.
Addressing the meeting, MLA Wungnaoshang Keishing observed that the demand for creation of a separate district is for the welfare of the people and whether the demand would be achieved or not lies in the hands of the people.
Appealing to all concerned not to create any sort of disturbance in the pursuit of this demand, the MLA cautioned that in case of disturbance, it would be regarded as anti-people and anti-development by others.
No one should also try to politicalise the issue, he added.
ADC Member KS Joseph informed the meeting that the demand of the Committee has been taken up for discussion in the Council.
It is expected that the members of the Council would extend also extend their support to the demand, he said.
