Reliance caretaker shot dead before family while asleep

Imphal, April 05 2011:
A gruesome murder of a caretaker of the Reliance mobile service in front of his family members has angered locals of Wangkheimayum Leirak, Imphal East, who demanded booking of the culprits within three days.
Caretaker Oinam Borbabu Singh (35), who is also a Moibung Khongba (conch player), son of O Shamjai was shot by two suspected UGs last night around 8.30 pm at his house at Wangkheimayum Leirak under Porompat PS.
Police recovered an empty case of .32 mm ammunition.
Two gunmen shot Borbabu in the head in front of his wife and other family members while he was asleep.
He succumbed to his bullet injury at Shija hospital where he was reffered to by JNIMS hospital.
Borbabu is survived by his wife and two sons and a daughter.
Two towers, one for Reliance and the other for Airtel are installed in deceased man's homestead.
He was the caretaker of the Reliance tower while his twin, O Shotababu, is the caretaker of the Airtel tower.
Family members said that two unknown youths came on a numberless grey Activa Honda during the day time, around 1.30 pm, before leaving, they informed Borbabu that they would come again.
Around 8.30 pm, two unknown persons came and one of them went straight to the bedroom where Borbabu was sleeping and shot him once in the head.
The family could not confirm whether the two gunmen were those who had come in the afternoon.
Sandyarani, wife of Borbadu, wept and related, "I asked him (the gunman who entered the bedroom) the reason of entering the bedroom, but he said nothing.
Instead, he took out a gun and fired in the head of her husband.
He left hurriedly after the act" .
The other youth entered the room of Shotababu and took away the key of the store where the power generator and other equipments of Airtel tower are stored.
He also asked Shotababu whether, he was operating the tower to which he replied that he had stopped operation of the tower since being banned by an UG group.
As the youth went out of the room, a gunshot was fired towards the room, family members said.
Before, the two youths entered the house of Borbabu, they had threatened about five youths who were watching TV at the local club adjacent to the house.
They forced the youths to remain inside the club room after snatching away four mobile handsets and a torch light at gun point.
Yesterday's incident was the second time Borbabu was targeted by suspected UGS.
He had escaped a life attempt on the night of March 18.On that night, suspected UGs fired at him while he was going out to put off the power generator of the mobile tower.
A public meeting held in the locality today formed a JAC against the killing of Borbabu and resolved to press the government to book the culprits behind the murder within three days.
The dead body will not be taken back unless the government books the culprits within the deadline, the other resolution of the meeting said adding the JAC will launch various forms of agitations with the support of the people and NGOs.
Police allowed a rally of the people accompanied by local MLA E Suraj to proceed to submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister.
The Chief Minister assured of payment of compensation as well as a government job to a member of the family.
The JAC has decided to take back the dead body of Borbabu tomorrow from the JNIMS morgue.
