Poachers punished, cop rewarded

Whereas two individuals who shot dead a monkey and another one who was arrested together with the severed head and skin of python have been sent to jail, a police officer has been rewarded by Court for his exceptional contribution towards protection of wildlife.
In a landmark judgement, the Court of CJM Imphal East sentenced two persons who shot dead a monkey at Paomei Colony on March 30 to prison for five days today.
Apart from the prison term, K Andrew Kom of Paomei Colony and AS Mahai of Chingmeirong Kabui village have been slapped a fine of Rs 20,000 for killing the monkey.
A single barrel gun used by the duo in killing the monkey has also been impounded.
The same Court announced a reward of Rs 5000 for Imphal East Commando SI Md Abbas Khan for his role in arresting the duo and his contributions towards protection of wildlife.
In another case, the Court of CJM Chandel has sentenced one Puyam Open Khuman of Moreh Ward No 7 to prison for three months in addition to imposing a fine of Rs 10,000 .
Puyam Open was arrested along with skin and head of python by troops of 24 AR before he was handed over to Forest Department, conveyed a source.
