Imphal, August 18 2013:
A van driver operating along Imphal-Moreh Road was found shot dead right inside his vehicle at Narankonjin under Wangoi Police Station at around 2 pm today.
The deceased driver has been identified as Okram Gyanendro (35), s/o Ashok of Singjamei Okram Leikai.
He is survived by his wife and two children.
Gyanendro had been operating the van hired from someone to support his family.
His lifeless body was found at the back seat of the van, which was parked at the roadside.
He sustained two bullet injuries on his forehead.
There were also three bullet marks on his van.
According to police, some vegetables and two toy buses were found from the vehicle.
One of the toy buses was fitted with some circuit board.
The driver might have been killed after he was abducted or his van hijacked by some persons.
Family members told Hueiyen Lanpao that Gyandendro returned home from Moreh yesterday evening and he went out from home at around 6.30 am today to deliver some goods brought from Moreh to the owners.
He informed his wife on mobile phone at around 9 am that he had finished delivering the goods and would arrive home after purchasing some vegetables from Pishum Bazar.
However, he could not be contacted after that call as his mobile phone remained switched off.
Later, his sister residing at Narankonjin informed the family members of his death.
Meanwhile, irate locals of Singjamei Okram Leikai blocked Imphal-Moreh Road in protest against Gyanendro's murder demanding the authorities to bring out the culprits.
A public meeting would be held tomorrow to form a Joint Action Committee (JAC) and take resolutions for further course of action.
