Government orders probe into KSO activities

The state government has initiated a probe against the Kuki Students' Organisation (KSO) on the ground of its involvement in 'unlawful acts' and days after the organisation spearheaded protests against the government's eviction drives in reserved forest and protected areas.
Registrar of Societies, Manipur Arambam Valentina has issued an order appointing deputy registrar of societies, Imphal East T Somokanta Singh as enquiry officer to investigate into affairs of KSO under Section 22 of the Manipur Societies Registration Act, 1989 and directed to submit the report within 10 days from the date of issuance of the order.
As per the order issued on March 15, Kuki Students' Organisation (KSO) was registered under Manipur Societies Registration Act, 1989 bearing Registration No.2991/SR/1979 (December 29,1979) with its office address as Gihon Villa New Lambulane, Imphal.
As per records available at the office of the Registrar of Societies, Manipur, KSO has not submitted annual reports, balance sheets, auditor's reports, etc., for the last 43 years and it was found involved in unlawful acts, the order maintained.
While mentioning that Section 14 of Manipur Societies Registration Act, 1989 and Rule No 17 of Manipur Societies Registration Rules, 2004 provide for maintenance of a register of members in form M, the order also said that Section 15 of the 1989 Act and its Rules provide for maintenance of books of ac counts and for audit.
Section 16 of the Act provides for annual general body meetings to be conducted every year while Section 17 necessitates submission of annual and other returns to the registrar, the order mentioned.
