Chandel, December 16 2018:
Ringjoy Leivon Lamkang was on Friday, December 14, 2018, crowned as the first ever Miss Chakpi 2018 .
The beauty contest was organised by Anal Sinnu Ruwl, an apex women body of the Anal community of Chandel, where the pageant title comes with a mission unlike other beauty pageant competitions of the State.
Anal Sinnu Ruwl (ASR) president, NL Zomhlung said that Chakpi river, which is the lifeline of Chandel is in a very pitiable condition, highly polluted and is not fit for human uses anymore like it used to be.
She recalled that in the past the water from the river (Chakpi) was fresh, clean and potable and added that at present the villagers hired wage earners from outside the State to collect water without knowing if the water is clean/potable or not.
Saying that the practice of prohibited fishing such as bleaching power, dynamites and fishing bombs discreetly in the river caused great harm, she added that ASR have decided to take certain steps and campaign to help clean and preserve the Chakpi river.
She also stated that "Miss Chakpi" will be organised annually from this year onward and the beauty queens will be given the task to campaign for clean Chakpi.
Ringjoy Leivon Lamkang, a 3rd Semester students of English honour at United College, Chandel, while extremely excited about having won the title, lamented on the pathetic condition of the Chakpi river.
She contended that she will adjust her time and even travel with the committee and ASR from village to village to safeguard the the river as it is the lifeline of many people.
She also narrated of an incident where one women came with a garbage to dump it into the river when she and her friends were cleaning the river.
She added that the garbage was burnt instead.
