88.2% teen girls in Manipur attend schools, according to Teen Age Girls (TAG) Report 2018, said Dr Latashori K, Director HOPARD, Imphal today at a dissemination workshop held at Lamyanba Shanglen, Palace Compound, Imphal today.
The workshop was organised by KC Mahindra Education Trust and Naandi Foundation with HOPARD, Imphal as dissemination partner.
Speaking at the dissemination workshop, HOPARD Director Social Research, Dr Latashori K said that the event was organised following an All India survey of teenage girls in 2016-17.The report, TAG Report 2018, has been already published in Mumbai on October 25.The workshop today was held to share the report chapter on Manipur.
School going and non school going teen girls ages between 13 to 19 years were targeted in the survey, she said.
The report details the percentages of teen girls in school and non-school going and drop outs.
The survey also aimed at finding the reasons for teen girls abandoning schools, she said.
As per the report, Manipur with a population of 28,55,794 has 2,02,263 girls between the age of 13-19 years, based on Census of India 2011 .
TAG Report 2018 (Manipur):
Education: While 88.2 % of the girls under the age 13-19 years attend schools, only 38.8 % of the girls do not face problems while going to schools/colleges, said the report suggesting that majority of the girls face problems while going schools and colleges.
76.4% of the girls wishes to complete at least graduation or study for a job entrance examination and 90.6% of the girls have aspirations about career/jobs, the report said.
Interestingly, 95.4% of the girls wishes to learn English and Computer skills, while only 49.3% of them have access to mobile phones.
Top job choice
90.6% of the girls chose teacher or nurse as their top career choice.
Marital status
95.7% of the teenage girls are not married, the report said while 96.1 % of the girls wish to marry at age 21 years or later.
Hygiene
64.3% of the teenage girls use hygienic methods of menstrual protection.
96.4% of the girls do not go for open defecation, the TAG report said.
The TAG survey was done under the project Nanhi Kali, managed jointly by KC Mahindra Education Trust and Naandi Foundation.
Nanhi Kali is a project supporting girls to complete ten years of basic schooling across the country.
