Joykumar stresses on need to preserve indigenous rice

Deputy Chief Minister Yumnam Joykumar has conveyed that ICAR and CAU along with line department are playing crucial roles to raise awareness among the farmers about modern techniques in agriculture and for the welfare of the farming community.
He was speaking at the inaugural function of the four days long State level Kisan Mela 2019, organised by ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Manipur Centre Lamphelpat, at ICAR campus, Lamphelpat today.
He underlined the need of developing agriculture in Manipur where there are no big industries yet the agriculture sector plays an important role for the people.
The Dy CM also stressed on the importance of improving agri products through research and preserving the indigenous produces and raw materials of the State.
Although the indigenous rice is not high yielding variety, it is necessary to conserve and preserve it, he added.
He released a souvenir as part of the function.
The mela was organised on the theme "Bridging lab to land gap for doubling farmers' income" and sponsored by ICAR for NEH Region, ICAR-VPKAS Almora, NABARD Manipur Region, MIDH Manipur, ABI Manipur, AICRP on Mushroom, Manipur Centre and AICRP on STCR Manipur Centre.
Altogether, 1000 farmers from all the districts of the State and 50 stalls from various departments like ICAR, CAU, KVKs, ABI, MOMA, NGOs, entrepreneurs are participating in the mela.
