Imphal, May 16 2022: Chief Minister N Biren inaugurated the first edition of Dhanamanjuri University Unifest 2022, a youth festival of the varsity comprising DM College of Science, Commerce and Arts, Ghanapriya Women's College and LMS Law College, on Monday at the central hall of DM College of Science here.

Speaking on the occasion, CM Biren assured of developing modern infrastructure in the university and said that the government will put every possible effort to complete installation of these infrastructures and also inaugurate the academic block during its 100 days programme window.

The CM also assured of constructing additional hostel, examination block and to declare the recruitment results of teaching and non-teaching staff as soon as possible.

Emphasising on the importance of good moral character and behaviour among the students, the CM said that good moral and behaviour are the building blocks of an ideal society and without which there Will be chaos.

Stating that the government is always open to suggestions, he called upon the student community to bring any problem to the government before resorting to bandh or blockade as these activities are hampering the development of the state.

While pointing out that he spent his first term in bringing peaceful environment in the state and in averting bandh, blockade and communal discord, Biren opined that the huge public mandate received in the recent assembly election is outcome of socio-political cordiality.

Earlier, there were suspicion against the establishment due to nepotism and corruption but the present government is trying to sort out the roadblocks in order to bring about a transparent, smooth and accountable administration, he maintained, adding that process for streamlining appointment of VCs and principals of universities and colleges has begun with the sole objective to bring improvement in the education sector.

Expressing concern over the negative impact of drug abuse, CM Biren said that his government is taking up the war on drugs campaign keeping in view of the gravity of the issue.

People are well aware how drug abuse lead to impotency and one could imagine what will be the future of the state after two or three decades if today's youth are given free pass to abuse drugs, he said, while urging teachers to contribute in the campaign by creating awareness among the students.

Further stating that the state is fortunate to get a university of the stature of DM University, the Chief Minister also expressed his happiness on witnessing the discipline and respect shown by the young students of the university during the march past parade.

He said that it is quite pleasing and gratifying to witness the young and fit students dressed in traditional costumes, promoting and preserving our tradition and culture.

Stressing the need to promote and preserve the history and identity, the CM said there are some outsiders who are trying to manipulate and wrongly portray Manipur's history and asked the public to stay away from such forces.

He further stressed on the need to include the state's history in the education syllabus.

He recounted historical events like the Seven Years' Devastation and elucidated contributions of kings like Maharaj Kullachandra, Maharaj Gambhir Singh in the nation building process while encouraging the students to have the same sense of nationalism.

The CM also said that the Anglo-Manipuri War was fought on several fronts, and the government is trying to observe the War memorial at Tengnoupal and Mayang Khang also, starting next year.

He also mentioned about the renaming of Mt Harriet in Andaman and Nicobar Island into Mt Manipur as a mark of honouring Maharaja Kullachandra.

In his address as the guest of honour, education minister Th Basanta said that the festival will have a strong impact to the future of the state since youths are the foundations of the society, and how a state and nation grows depends on them.

He urged the students to participate in the festival and share ideas and interact with others.

DMU vice-chancellor professor N Rajmuhon said that the festival will provide a platform for showing the multidimensional talents of the youths of the state in various extracurricular activities.

The four-day event will provide opportunities to the students of the five colleges to compete in various events in a healthy spirit of fair competition.

The festival will showcase the idea of promoting art and culture, foster the idea of brotherhood and bring about emotional integration among the students from different communities through cultural events, he added.

The inaugural function was also attended by Thangmeiband MLA Kh Joykisan, higher & technical education commissioner M Harekrishna, principals of constituent colleges, faculty members and students among others.
