Th Radheshyam says folktales culture will make schools attractive to students

Imphal, May 16 2018: Education Minister Thokchom Radheshyam said that the habit of telling folktales to students can intrigue their interest towards school.

He asserted that the folktales are treasures of moral values and lessons that need to be instilled to the young minds to enhance their conduct and discipline.

The Minister was speaking as chief guest at the inauguration of a seven-day workshop on folktales and its educative values for elementary school teachers.

The workshop was organised by State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Government of Manipur at the Nambol Higher Secondary School, Nambol.

The Education Minister urged all the 50 participating teachers to tell a folktale to each other during the training session so that they could imbibe the habit and the art of telling stories, for the sake of the students as well as the school.

He said, the workshop would help in reinstating the old age tradition of telling folktales (Phunga-wari) to one another, especially the children and the generations to come at schools, if not at home.

Teachers, he added, have a very important role in shaping the society.

Every trait that every individual practice is because of a teacher.

He stressed that children are always, in one way or the other, talented but it is the teacher who should discover such innate qualities in children and to make them a successful and educated citizen.

He appealed the entire teaching fraternity to carry out their duty with interest and love and insisted that a school must be made a place for attraction for children.

He asked the teachers to be innovative while mentoring and guiding the young minds to make the learning and teaching motivating and to encourage them to come to school and attend their classes.

The Minister further asked the teachers to apply visual teaching to make learning fascinating.

Zonal Education Officer Bishnupur Nepram Tikendrajit Singh, while speaking as guest of honour, said that such workshop emphasizing on the importance of folktales is a relevant topic to re-establish the moral lessons filling the void of moral science that was once a subject.

The first session of the workshop was conducted by Professor H Bihari as resource person.

The inaugural programme was attended by dignitaries, Principal of the school, officials concerned, teachers and students.

It may be mentioned that the workshop on folktales & its educative values is being carried out to revive the old age tradition and gather the significance of folktales, a wealth of lessons that would help in grooming the young children in becoming a more refined individual.
