Imphal, December 18 2018: Senior Residents (SRs) of JNIMS, who have been on a cease work strike since December 5 demanding that the terms of agreement reached between them and the State Government on October 2 be translated into action, stayed away from participating the 11th Foundation Day of the medical institution which was attended by Chief Minister N Biren Singh and instead staged a protest at the hospital premises today.

It may be recalled that the SRs' protest which was initiated from August 21 this year, was relaxed for a time after the Health Minister assured to look into-their demands, which included providing room for progression/promotion in the service career of SRs, which is not allowed by the Service Rules of the Medical Institution (JNIMS) of 2015 till date.

The SRs then held a meeting with the State Government, including the Chief Minister, the Health Minister and the Principal Secretary (Health) on October 2, during which the two sides reached an agreement.

The Chief Minister, during the meeting, had assured promotions for all the eligible SRs and to avoid financial constraints with appointment of new Assistant Professors as well as to cancel open direct recruitment till all eligible candidates are adjusted to the next higher posts so as to maintain seniority and service career.

Speaking to media persons on the sideline of the protest, Dr TB Ram, a regular SR at JNIMS, explained that the demands of the SRs include promotion of PG completed SRs who have been working in JNIMS for more than five years to the posts of Assistant Professors, absorption of non regular SRs on tenure basis and deputation and to establish a scheme for career advancement/service protection of all MBBS SRs, Casualty Medical Officers,(CMOs) among other employees who are employed in JNIMS.

TB Ram continued that the SRs are losing faith in the State Government as it has failed to initiate any positive steps with regard to the assurance given in the October 2 meeting.
