Translation workshop of Tribal folk poetry begins

A Two-Day Translation Workshop of Manipur Tribal Folk Poetry organised by the Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi in association with Cultural Forum Manipur began today at the Manipur State Guest House, Imphal.
Renowned writer Khumanthem Prakash and President, Cultural Forum Manipur Dr S Chaoba graced the function as Chief Guest and President respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, Prakash said that even though it is a good step to translate the tribal folk poems in English, it should be kept in the mind that the culture of the tribal dialect should not be affected while translating.
If the translation is carried out without proper knowledge of the culture of the concern tribes and their dialects, it will give a false meaning of the rich culture of the poetry.
Writers of Kabui, Chiru, Mao, Liangmei, Maring, Thadou, Kuki, Paite, Koireng, Gangte, Tangkhul, Lamkang, Hmar, Suktu, Purum, Tarao, Moyon and Anal tribes presented folk poems in their dialects and they were translated in Manipuri as part of the workshop today.
Professor E Dwijamani, Profesor Th Ratankumar, L Birendrakumar, Professor H Bihari, Dr Ng Nabachandra and Makhonmani Mongshaba will be translating the poems into English.
