Grenades 'gifted'

Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) Mayor L Lokeshore and CAF&PD Director Ranjan Yumnam were presented hand grenades in two separate incidents.
A hand grenade packed inside a chocolate (Munch) box which was then put inside a bag was delivered to the receptionists of IMC at around 12.10 pm today by some miscreants today saying that it was meant for the 'honourable Mayor' .
Some 15/20 minutes later, the Mayor arrived at his office and the receptionist promptly brought the bag to him.
"On opening the bag, I saw a Munch chocolate box.
Soon I told some staff to take the box outside and check its content.
As my staff opened the chocolate box, a hand grenade was found inside," Lokeshore said.
Saying that not a piece of paper written with anything was found inside the box, the Mayor maintained that there was no case of anybody threatening him.
Moreover, no individual or group has claimed responsibility for sending the hand grenade, he said.
Nonetheless, he appealed to all concerned not to repeat such acts of mental harassment.
Later, a team of City Police took away the hand grenade.
On the other hand, some unidentified persons placed a hand grenade near the residential gate of CAF&PD Director Yumnam Ranjan at Wangkhei Ningthem Pukhri Mapal last night.
A police source informed that the hand grenade was found at the foot of a brick wall just beside the residential gate of Ranjan.
A bomb disposal and detection squad of Manipur Police assisted by Imphal East district police retrieved the grenade and set it off safely at Yaralpat.
In connection with the incident, a case has been registered at Porompat police station and due investigation has been launched.
Meanwhile, local womenfolk staged a protest demonstration today denouncing the act of placing a hand grenade at the civilian populated area.
