CCpur, November 09 2020:
With COVID-19 cases continuing to spread unabated, the ill-equipped District Hospital Churachandpur has seen its doctors digging into their own pockets to set up a makeshift OT for Covid patients.
Sources in the hospital said frequent cases of Covid patients requiring scheduled and emergency operations has left them with no choice but to look for ways to segregate the Operation Theatre.
There are many who are awaiting their scheduled operation in the hospital wards but when someone who was operated upon turns positive, the OT has to be closed down for days delaying the scheduled ones which are at times perilous.
Many of the positive cases that went under the knife are emergency cases.
This, the source said greatly affects the scheduled ones as well as other emergency operations.
Besides it is always desirable that Covid and non-Covid cases have separate OTs, it added.
Though the structure for the dedicated Covid OT has been largely complete, the equipment inside it is still very minimal.
More resources will be needed to make the OT functional and it is not known when it will be fully functional, maintained the source.
The need for a separate OT is starkly evident by the closure of the existing OT for the next two days despite other scheduled operations as a positive woman underwent a CS to give birth yesterday.
If an emergency case crops up during this closure, then the hospital authorities will be helpless, as the lone OT will be closed on Monday and Tuesday for decontamination.
The Isolation Ward in the hospital, though primarily meant to isolate Covid suspects has been converted into a Covid Ward as the cases are surging and referring symptomatic patients to Imphal is not always practical.
Last month the Ward saw 45 positive cases being admitted.
Of these 10 cases are considered severe.
There are 5 fatalities, and 30 of the cases are with mild to moderate symptoms.
Two of the cases are Caesarian Section, one head injury and another was appendicitis.
In November, 12 Covid patients have been admitted so far.
Nine of them are having mild to moderate diseases, 3 are having severe ailments and while one had a Caesarian Section.
According to the IDSP, CMO Churachandpur data, the district has as on 9 November 2020 recorded 1526 positive cases with 169 of them being active.
1336 cases are considered recovered while it has recorded 21 death cases.
The latest fatality, a 50-year-old female from Hmar Veng was reported from the District Hospital Covid
Ward today.
