Imphal, October 05 2016:
Former Minister and vice president of the State unit of the BJP M Hemanta has asserted that it is wrong to use students as shields in any agitation or strike held in the State.
Speaking at the annual literary cum felicitation function of Shining Academy, Langathel, the BJP leader said that students are increasingly being caught in the tussle between the different voluntary organisations and the State Government.
It is worrying to see young students being asked to come out of the class rooms and take part in protests on the roads, frequently made to stage dhamas, being tear gassed and assaulted by the police, said Hemanta and added that such spectacles will never be witnessed in any other part of the world.
The former Minister also came out heavily against the decision of the State Government to declare a holiday in all educational institutes on Teachers' Day this year.
What type of governance is this, he questioned.
Students should not be disturbed under any circumstances, he said and added that they should be allowed to pursue their academics freely.
Producing good students to neutralise the many ills of society is needed, he added.
Students of the Academy staged songs and recited poems during the day's programme.
Hemanta attended the function as the chief guest.
