Imphal, October 05 2016:
After transporters and drivers affiliated to the Transporters and Drivers Council (TDC) launched a cease work strike since October 2 citing extremely bad conditions of Imphal-Jiribam highway along some sections, a high level meeting was held today and the existing condition of the highway was discussed at length.
Notably, with funds provided by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), BRO has been constructing and repairing Imphal-Jiribam highway for several decades.
However, the highway has not improved a bit along some sections.
Some of these sections look like drains with water flowing over the road.
As loaded trucks could not pass these sections, the drivers launched the cease work strike.
The meeting held today was attended by Works Minister Ksh Biren, officials of PWD National Highway Division and representatives of TDC.
The meeting discussed about repairing the most dilapidated sections to a passable level at the initiative of the State Government although BRO is in charge of the highway.
Yet, it was also agreed that repairing the highway at the initiative of the State Government would amount to undue interference in the works and functions of BRO.
Then the meeting discussed about exerting strong pressure on BRO so that the highway is constructed/repaired with due emphasis on the qualitative aspect.
However, as the meeting failed to adopt a concrete decision, there was no question of TDC calling off the ongoing cease work strike, informed a source.
