Imphal, August 02 2009:
President of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Manipur Pradesh, Radhabinod Koijam today said that it is hard to believe that Chief Minister O Ibobi would have knowingly given a misleading statement in the Assembly regarding the July 23 firing incident at Khwairamband market that left a young pregnant woman and a youth dead and five other civilians injured.
However, his statement appears to be wrong after reading the report and seeing the photographs of Tehelka, he said.
Radhabinod Koijam said that a proposal on setting up an independent inquiry into the incident was moved and demanded in the Assembly.
Now it is all the more relevant that a higher level inquiry into the incident headed by a judge of the Supreme Court or the High Court is greatly needed.
The people's suspicion on the encounter killings has become cleared today, the NCP leader said and added that we all must know that no one may be killed without a proper trial in a court.
We all live under the law.
That's why people have been demanding repeal or removal of AFSPA, he said.
Manipur is a part of a democratic nation.
The people give votes to the Congress at the time of elections.
It is confusing now what the people really want.
The political leaders are at sixes and sevens what to say about the prevailing situations, Radhabinod Koijam lamented.
