Imphal, March 19 2021:
The Centre is awaiting a proposal it had sought from the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) Imphal to consider upgrading it to the status of AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences), said Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan in a letter to Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba.
The letter dated March 10 was a reply to MP Leishemba Sanajaoba's September 21, 2020 letter urging the Centre to upgrade RIMS Imphal to the status of AIIMS or similar status.
In the letter, the Union Minister informed that the matter relating to upgradation of RIMS Imphal to the status of institute established under an Act of the Parliament was discussed in the 13th meeting of the Board of Governors (BoG) of RIMS on September 14, 2019 .
The meeting of the BoG had observed that matter should be deliberated thoroughly and it was suggested that a committee be constituted under the chairmanship of Jarnail Singh, Vice Chancellor, Manipur University to study the pros and cons of upgrading RIMS before such a proposal is submitted to the Ministry.
The letter also mentioned that the BoG had emphasised that all ongoing projects be completed so that the proposal of the institute (RIMS), when submitted, can be examined in true perspective.
As such, a proposal in this regard is awaited from the RIMS.
The institute was requested to take follow up action on the recommendation of the BoG on October 8, 2020 and further reminded on December 4, 2020 and February 5, 2021 to expedite the matter.
Further action in the matter would be taken up after receipt of a detailed proposal from the RIMS, said the letter.
