One remanded, five given bail

One individual who is accused of threatening a senior reporter of Poknapham daily in the aftermath of a hand grenade being lobbed at the office of the daily paper on February 13 has been remanded to judicial custody for 15 days, five others pulled up in connection with the same incident have been released on bail.
The Court of CJM, Imphal West remanded Md Abdul Hassan (34) of Saiton Awang Leikai but presently staying at Kwakta Bazar to judicial custody for 15 days yesterday.
The five individuals who have been granted bail are Sirajuddin (29) of Kwakta (B), Jamaruddin (51) of Kwakta Ward No 5, Moijing Maulana Tajuddin (34) of Kwakta Ward No 5, Samir Khan (36) of Kshetrigao Kshetri Awang Leikai and Moirangthem Ramesh (24) of Moirang Khunou Makha Leikai.
All of them were produced before the Court of CJM Imphal West yesterday and the Assistant Public Prosecutor prayed the Court to remand them to judicial custody for 15 days.
On the other hand, the counsels appearing on behalf of the accused persons submitted bail applications.
After hearing both the sides, the Court observed that there was prima facie evidence of the involvement of Md Abdul Hassan in supplying SIM card which was used in sending threat messages to a senior reporter of the Poknapham daily in the aftermath of a hand grenade being lobbed at its office.
Stating that detention of Abdul Hassan is necessary for a thorough investigation of the case, the Court remanded him to judicial custody for 15 days.
Further noting that no prima facie evidence can be obtained against the other accused persons about their involvement in the particular crime even after they were detained for 18 days, the Court ordered that they should be released on bail on furnishing PR bonds of Rs 50,000 each.
