As the samples have been confirmed positive, extensive awareness campaigns would be organised to educate the public about Hepatitis B .
Saying that the mode of Hepatitis B transmission is similar to those of HIV, the Health Director maintained that people need not panic.
Hepatitis B is a viral disease that normally attacks the liver.
It is quite different from malaria, cholera or dengue.
Hepatitis B may be transmitted from infected mother to kid, infected man or woman to his/her sexual partner through intercourse, sharing of needle or syringe with infected persons, sharing shaving blade or toothbrush with infected person.
There is already a vaccine to protect mankind from Hepatitis B, informed the Health Director.
He further advised against having sex with people other than with their own partners, to undertake stringent test before blood transfusion and taking up additional precautionary measures for pregnant women so as to protect oneself from Hepatitis B .
If a person has crossed 55 years of age, there is no use of taking anti-Hepatitis B vaccine.
Out of the total number of positive cases, around 85% test positive when the blood samples are tested again after nine months, he added.
