Classical solo dance festival held

In an attempt to promote classical Manipuri solo dance, a Classical Manipuri Dance Festival was held at MDU Hall today.
The festival was organised by SANCHALI under the sponsorship of Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi.
Secretary of Manipur State Kala Academi, Sh Bideshowr Sharma; Director of JN Manipur Dance Academy, L Upendra Sharma have graced the festival as the chief guest and president respectively.
The festival was also attended by Deputy Director of Art and Culture department, W Wera Singh; Director of Manipur Ensemble, Ksh Jugindra and Theatre critic and playwright Budha Chingtham as the guests of honour.
Giving the keynote address, Secretary of SANCHALI, Dr M Thoiba said neither significant principle has been followed nor specific dress has been prescribed or used in Manipuri classical solo dance.
He also noted that no classical dancer is present in the State.
As such, Manipur could not occupy a place in the national as well as international stage when it comes to the field of classical solo dance, Dr Thoiba observed.
He said the aim of the festival is to produce classical solo dancers and to promote the dance with specific precept.
Five artists have presented solo performance during the festival.
Prominent artistes of the State have also made their presence felt in the festival today.
