Along with setting a new deadline for publication of the photo electoral roll of the State on August 31, the Election Commission of India has instructed the State Government to appoint IAS officers above the rank of Commissioner as observers to look after any possible error in the preparation of the roll.
Disclosing this to The Sangai Express, a reliable source said that the instruction was given to State Chief Electoral Officer RR Rashmi during a meeting chaired by Chief Election Commissioner of India N Gopalaswamy at New Delhi on February 7 .
While informing that the draft photo roll would be published on June 30 after a special revision and the final photo electoral roll on August 31, the source disclosed that so far 18 percent of the photo electoral roll exercise has been completed in the hills and 60 percent in the valley.
Acting on the instruction of the Election Commission for appointment of IAS officers who are above the rank of Commissioner as observers to look after and rectify the mistakes that might be there before the publication of the photo electoral roll, the State Election Department has submitted a list of the name of IAS officers, the source said.
The number of observers to be appointment for the purpose is two in the hills and one in the valley, the source added.
The source further said that along with publication of the photo electoral roll, rationalisation of the polling stations where there are more than 1000 voters in case of rural area and above 1200 voters in case of urban areas would also be carried out.
