World Population Day observed all over the state

Imphal, July 11 2012: As in other parts of the globe, the Family Welfare Services, Manipur today observed the World Population Day in the Conference Hall of its office at BT Road, Imphal under the theme 'Universal Access to Reproductive Health Services' .

Health and Family Welfare Minister Phungzathang Tonsing and Director of Family Welfare Services Dr L Surchandra graced the function as Chief Guest and President respectively.

State Mission Director, State Health Society, Manipur Devesh Deval also attended the function as Guest of Honour.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister Phungzathang Tonsing said that government is planning to give maximum facilities under health care system to the people in remote areas of the state through village ASHAs.

The Minister, however, admitted that there is a huge difference between the healthcare facilities enjoying by the people in the hills and plains.

He also noted that Manipur has witnessed some population control measures in the past few years and observed that this is a good sign of development and sound economy and the government is doing its best to give a better lifestyle and opportunities to the people of the state.

Devesh Deval pointed out that increased in population has become a threat to the survival of the mankind today.

The current birth rate of Manipur is 14.9 per thousand and death rate is 4.2 per thousand in a year.

The National Population Policy of India is targeting to keep the total population of India to a stable position by 2045 .

Adult Continuing Education and Extension Department (ACEE), Manipur University also observed the day at Thongju Part II Maibi Lampak today.

Pradhan, Thongju Part II Gram Panchayat Chirom Romeo; HOD In Charge, ACEE, MU Dr Lamalu Thaimei and Prof T Gambhir, Department of Community Medicin, RIMS graced the function as Chief Guest, President and Guest of Honoure respectively.

Dr B Gokulchandra, MU Health Centre and Dr S Gunadhor, Retd Principal, RK Sanatombi Devi College of Education also attended as resource persons.

On the other hand, the Song and drama Division, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Govt of India, Imphal Centre and District Family Welfare Bureau, Thoubal observed World Population Day at the community hall of Ningombam Luxmi Bazaar in Thoubal District today.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr.Radheshyam, CMO, Thoubal highlighted the problem of increasing population in India.

It is said that the observance would go on for one week during which various cultural programmes, songs and short plays based on the theme of the observance would be witnessed.
