Ukhrul, July 25 2021:
Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS) has condemned the police action against ordinary citizens at Yaingangpokpi on July 23, terming the act as a wanton display of violence by men in uniform.
The students' organisation has also urged the authorities concerned to take cognisance of the public concern over the brutal act and ensure that such unsavoury incidents do not recur in the future.
Taking deep umbrage at the incident, the body said that video clips of the violent incident were being widely circulated on the social media.
"While we leave it to the authority to conduct an impartial probe, we are, nevertheless, constrained to remind that such a wanton public display of violence depicts a sorry picture of the revered men in uniform," TKS president Shimri Raising and general secretary Yuimi Vashum stated in a press statement.
The student leaders pointed out that it is incumbent upon the police to act in a dignified and lawful manner under every situation.
"Unleashing such a brutal act upon ordinary citizens sullies the image of the police and portrays a sad case of law-keepers turning into law-breakers," they continued.
At the same time, they said that they were deeply saddened to observe the grossly inappropriate behaviour of the thronging bystanders, as seen in the video.
They said that the people were seen making shouts of encouragement even as the police assaulted the citizens mercilessly, in blatant violation of all the Covid SOPs and total curfew currently in place.
"Such actions amount to abetment of offence and is therefore highly condemnable," the student leaders added.
