Kohima, December 16 2016:
Nagaland Lok Sabha MP Neiphiu Rio has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asking him to reassess the Centre's decision to observe Good Governance Day on Christmas and observe it on another day.
"While the observance of Good Governance Day is a welcome initiative, the date on which it falls has hurt the sentiments of Christians," Rio wrote.
More than 90% of the population in Nagaland is Christian.
"You are aware that December 25 is the birthday of the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ.
It is observed as an official holiday across the state.
Majority of the population attends Christmas church services and participates in events that celebrate the spirit of Christmas," he went on to say.
The sentiments of the people have been hurt, he wrote, and added that apex church organizations have strongly opposed the observance of Good Governance Day on Christmas.
