Imphal, February 08, 2012:
Pointing out that by 2020, the total population in Manipur would cross 40 lakh, Social Advance Movement Manipur (SAMM) has suggested that in view of this, there is an urgent need to increase the number of elected MPs from Manipur in Parliament to 7, that is, 3 MPs in Rajya Sabha and 4 MPs in Lok Sabha.
In a statement, General Secretary of SAMM Prince Tanngamba Nongsaba observed that in addition to the existing two Lok Sabha seats, the third Lok Sabha segment should be created as an Unreserved seat by clubbing together some portions of Chandel and Churachandpur district and the seven Assembly segments in Thoubal district where the people are given the rights to vote but not to contest in the election to the Parliament with parts of Imphal East district, Sadar Hills and Senapati with Mao as the boundary and the fourth Lok Sabha segment could be created by including the northern and western portions of Chandel, Churachandpur, Ukhrul, Tengnoupal, Bishnupur, Tamenglong and Imphal West.
Likewise, the number of existing seat in Rajya Sabha should be increased from the present one to 3, the statement observed, adding that increasing the number of seats in the Parliament should ensure equitable distribution of developmental fund.
