Imphal, April 07 2010:
Unidentified armed persons hurled a hand grenade at the Uripok Achom Leikai residential compound of Chanam Jugindro (50), who is an Agriculture Officer in the State Agriculture Department.
The grenade, however, did not explode.
It was detected lying in the courtyard by Manglembi Devi, wife of the officer at around 6.30 am today.
Police have retrieved the hand grenade.
Talking to mediapersons in connection with the incident, Jugindro, who is the scheme in-charge of oil seed, pulse and sugar cane in the Department, clarified that he had not received threat or monetary demand from any UG group.
However, there was one instance in which a UG group demanded 'tax' in connection with distribution of seeds for winter crops to the farmers, clubs and organisations, Jugindro said, without disclosing the name of the UG group.
The seeds have been distributed and made available to the people under the supervision of the Minister, Commissioner and Director of the Dept, he explained.
If anyone had been left out or the quantity was not sufficient, then the Dept would ensure sufficient quantity next time.
But no one should insist on 'tax' from the seeds to be distributed among the people free of cost, he added.
Meanwhile, in protest against the incident, local womenfolk staged a Wakat Meepham at Uripok Achom Leikai today.
